Commentary:

Abiao on Review The Analects of Confucius series:
We, Chinese, got lost ourselves by running after westerners. Since the western cultures came to the East, the cause-and-effect thinking method overcame the historical way of thinking. From an originally clear thinking state, we got lost and confused. Thus we were bound to roam; roam on politics, roam on the economy, roam on culture and roam on the arts. Westerners first taught us what was modern, then the postmodern, and we have no idea what is next. Time has passed and everything has changed. Our pride (Confucianism) has now become an undesirable trait in our character. We have suffered from being misled into confused thinking, and from being abandoned in difficulties. In the deceptive promises of globalisation, have we already lost our tolerance?

Facing the various papers I created each time, I could feel the simple and plain experience and wisdom carried by the Analects of Confucius. As the adaptive strategy for Chinese to our living environment, Confucian theories are free from happiness and anger, love and hatred, encouraging harmonious vigor outside oneself whilst maintaining tolerance inside. It was this vigor and tolerance that enabled our ancestors in the Ming dynasty to disseminate their delicate porcelains and Chinese culture to the world in a kind way. Each time I look at the Analects, I still feel its wisdom and purity so that I inevitably end up lost in a myriad of thoughts, lost in moodiness, love and hatred towards them. I express such feeling in my works.

Bamboo slips were used to record human wisdom, later they were milled into pulp and made into paper, which are still used to record human wisdom. Paper was introduced to the West, but the recorded wisdom remained in the East. Delivered between the East and the West, paper never brought any disturbances, thus they remained out of peoples concerns. Long time no see, Cai Lun! I reverted Cai Luns papers into pulp again, and together with recorded wisdom, I changed their shapes and organized their styles. Mixed with a brush, painted with paints, pounded with stick, I brushed, sprinkled and burned, attaching the spring breeze mingled with redbud fragrance at Swallow Hill to these hamburgers. What I can dedicate to you are only my paints, my beloved canvas and paper.
